Summary

A classic Enlightenment tale accompanied by 18 other pieces, including "Plato's Dream" and "Memnon" — all in a new translation。

Micromegas is a 650-year-old, 39-kilometer-high giant from the planet Sirius who can speak 1,000 languages and has been expelled from his homeland for writing a heretical tract。 On Saturn he befriends the local secretary of the Academy of Sciences—a comparative dwarf, being only two kilometers high—and the two decide to travel to earth together, where they will make startling discoveries about human nature。

This short book from 1752 is considered the first work of science fiction, which is why I wanted to read it。 It probably wouldn’t be considered all that creative compared to the sci-fi that is available today, but when you put it into context of the time period it was written, it’s really quite remarkable。 There are some interesting messages within this story, of which the blank book was my favorite。 It’s kind of a weird little story to be honest, but not in a bad way。 It’s worth the quick read。

I focus strictly on Voltaire “micromegas” my copy doesn’t have the other of which this is listed to have。 It is by far the least of my favorites of Voltaire。 But… it’s Voltaire so it’s not bad。

As with Candide, once again curiosity got the better of me。 The two stories that stand out from this collection to me are the titular Micromegas, an early sci-fi tale that fascinated me because of the combination of speculative elements and 18th century literary conventions (making it very different to modern sci-fi!), and Women Submit Yourselves Unto Your Husbands, which is shockingly feminist for the standards of the era。 The rest contains the usual themes, religious intolerance, satire of 18t As with Candide, once again curiosity got the better of me。 The two stories that stand out from this collection to me are the titular Micromegas, an early sci-fi tale that fascinated me because of the combination of speculative elements and 18th century literary conventions (making it very different to modern sci-fi!), and Women Submit Yourselves Unto Your Husbands, which is shockingly feminist for the standards of the era。 The rest contains the usual themes, religious intolerance, satire of 18th century French society, and so on。 Overall, a very interesting, often amusing, and very readable collection。 。。。more

I really enjoyed the concept and some of the meditations。 It also blew my mind how Voltaire conceived the universe for his time。 💫

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 🌟4/5Such a wonderful short story by Voltaire。 It really shows how small humans are and our insignificance。 I also liked how he was lightly poking fun of some of the philosophies of well known philosophers。 The end were Micromégas writes a philosophy book about the nature of things for the humans and it ended up being just blank pages was my favorite。

I just adore this little story。 If I had read it years ago I probably would have been bored out of my mind, but after growing up (and taking a philosophy course) it was perfect。 Bursts with imagination and deep thought。

These stories posed a number of interesting questions concerning societal standards, the morality of affairs, the role of high ranking officials both in the government and in church, as well as questioning everything we see as innate knowledge and questioning what we’ve been told our whole lives。 Voltaire’s critiques on the rich, organized religion, and government officials are still relevant 250+ years later!

This book was really nice to hear (I bought the audiobook)。 It was interesting and it made me think (I appreciate that)。 It was great to listen to the book before going to bed (it’s 1 am when I’m writing this)。 Nice experience :)

This was advertised as a book to read to fall asleep and it didn’t disappoint

This little tale, one of the first proper science fiction stories (some might argue it is more fantasy) has a humor and wit very characteristic of a Douglas Adams book。 He undoubtedly must have read it at some point。

Because we are too small…The concept Voltaire offers - that humans are fabulously small - is one I loved。 To suggest this to an 18th century audience is quite daring。 This seems to be a shift in thinking, a new suggestion is put forward, claiming the world is not only not geocentric but not “anthropocentric” (human-centred) either。 It truly makes us think about humanity, what we are and what use that has, if any。I found this satirical narrative very inspiring。 It sort of set me into relaxed-mode。 Realising that we are infinitely small in a world that is infinitely big, creates a feeling of peace。 We become aware of the insignificance of the stress we put ourselves through。 We appreciate the little and the huge because those too are boundlessly surrounded - in their own dimension - by other somethings。I quite enjoyed this little story and even more so the ideas it presented and the opportunities for deep ponderings that it furnished。 I’d recommend it if you want a fun, fast-paced read that will get your philosophical wheels spinning! 。。。more
